Steve, it ain't - the skin is plastic, and bounces reasonably well,
inside the front skeleton is magnesium alloy. It has no back underframe,
unlike the D300, but that has no effect on the critical tolerances and
strength of the camera.
Your Contax Aria feels like cheap plastic if you try a Contax ST instead
- metal and don't you know it!
You will not find any DSLR which feels much different to the A700 unless
you buy something which is heavier and more solid because it's huge and
expensive. The Nikon D300 is probably as good as you get for heft and
reassurance, but in fact, it is no more 'solid' than an A700, 5D, 40D or
whatever. They are all skinned in plastic because it does the job very
well.
