This is a fairly common problem with many point and shoots.  For instance,

my Fuji E510 has a power off feature that I can set for either 2 or 5 
minutes, but I can't disable altogether -- believe me, I've tried.

My Canon A720 is more flexible that way, I can either set it to power off 
att a given elapsed time of inactivity, or I can turn the feature off.

I haven't come across a DSLR that won't allow the feature to be disabled
--  
if it has the ability to automatically power down.
