Tamron "makes" Nikkor lenses???

I've had more than more salesman tell me that Tamron makes lenses for 
Nikon.  Is there any truth to this?  If so, what does it really mean?  
Suppose Tamron does make the optics, then Nikon takes the best 3% and 
Tamron deals with the rest.  Nikon still has the better glass, no matter.
