Quite some time back I made it a standard practice to
use 77mm rubber hoods, probably exactly the same as you
have. I bought a bunch of them from Fotodiox's eBay
store. I use step up rings to match them to virtually
any typical lense.
It turns out that I do have a couple of wide angle
lenses that seriously vignette with that configuration,
but for everything else that is 77mm or less, it works
very well.
The significance, however, is *not* the value as a hood,
but as a soft bumper around the front of the lense that
keeps it from being dinged. For bigger/heavier lenses such
as the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED, the value is great.
