I've tested for my own choice - fairly extensively - Canon 5d with 
17-40l vs Nikon D300 with Sigma 10-20.  Both raw (CaptureNX, Rawshooter 
for 5d).
As expected, the 5d / 17-40 has a slight advantage center frame.  Edges 
are the same. Corners, the 10-20 is better (!).
I really believe now that unless you have a Nikkor 14-24, or need wider 
than 17mm (full-frame), the differences are minor.
