There are many P&S that don't even require batteries. You can find these
cameras in convenience stores, drug stores, and WalMart.

Or if you require flash, you could go with a P&S that uses common AA
batteries. Common aklaline batteries have a fairly long life when not in
use, and if they are dead when you need it, you coulde 'borrow' the
batteries from the TV remote control.

If you want to move up from a P&S, none of the cameras I have in the
studio
"require" batteries, and several don't use batteries (or any electrical
power) at all. Most of my flash units are AC line powered, but I have
several ****table units that use AA batteries. I've tried rechargeable
batteries but found that the savings by recharging didn't justify the
short
life-- rechargeables usually can't put out the current that
non-rechargeables can.
