One thing to consider is overall loss of contrast can be a problem. Also 
try stopping way down to reduce or eliminate ghosts and make star points 
on the sun itself, or open up all the way & play around with the 
placement of the ghosts. Removing the filter can reduce ghosting & flare.

ghosting = 'flare' spots
flare = white veil which reduces contrast
