which is what you are talking about, is not usually considered
desireable. At the least, it reduces the contrast in an image.
However, if you understand it and intentionally use it as a creative
element (or just one you like), that's fine.
I like including the stage lighting for some types of shots just
because of the flare and I have a couple of lenses that are prone to
flare I use for that and similar purposes. However, it's not one of
the most controllable or predictable effects.

If you want to try some interesting flare effects, take some old filters
and
scratch them or ding them in different places, on the inside.
You might also try my variable soft focus filter. I breathe on the inside
of
a filter and screw it on fast. The softness is controlled by slightly
unscrewing it.
