Get a used Xti and be done with it.  You've obviously thought this out and

your assumptions seem to be correct.  Film cameras are pretty much
obsolete 
at this point.  The Xti will do a lot more than most  film SLRs, has much 
better resolution, is quicker and cheaper to process reults, etc.  Get a 
nice lens for it and that'll probably do you for many years to come.
