In addition to the Canon HF-DC1, I use a Vivatar slave to fire and old 
Pentax AF-240Z flash.  The flash simply attaches to the shoe of the slave,

and a regular single flash impulse will fire it.  The old Pentax has a 
sensor in the front and can fire on three levels.  It works pretty well
when 
my ps is in manual mode.  Perhaps something like that will work.
