Yeah, sometimes I wish I could afford more than one system...
Here is one more to consider:

With the Pentax be prepared to often use RAW to
get the best out of the camera: the jpg processing
is not as sorted out as the D40's.

This is not to say that there are major differences.
Or that it is a big chore.  Anyone using current
affordable dslrs will more than likely be using
RAW workflow anyway.

lot of fun of whatever your choice may be.
