Yes, I owned a Super 8 camera and projector as a kid. There was a fair
amount of industrial and scientific use of Super 8 film, which is one
of the reasons why it's easier to find B&W and Tungsten-balanced films
than the color negative films of my youth. Kodachrome 40 was discontinued
about 2 years ago. You might want to look at the http://pro8mm.com
site.

I have a bunch of Fuji 100 in my freezer, and for now I can still
find 200 and 400 speed film with little effort. But chromogenic
black and white, slide, and 100 ISO print films are already
artifacts of the past.

I can still get the film developed and printed fairly easily.
The local WalMart uses a Fuji Frontier with the correct
attachments. My local pro lab also still does a good job.
However, I don't know of any lab that makes use of the magnetic
information recorded on APS film.

Other places are decidedly hit or miss. Several times, I've
had everything printed and/or scanned at 4x6", even though I never
take the camera off of H format.

The Pronea S only has a single-spot autofocus system, and
the IX-Nikkors I own are mediocre. But if I use "real"
Nikkors, or stop the IX-Nikkors down a couple of stops, I
can get sharp 4x7" prints and acceptable (cropped) 8x10"
enlargements. Grain is no worse than comparable consumer
35mm film. A 4x12" P-format print was always a bit much
to ask from the negative size.

APS was strictly a mass-market technology. It was designed
to be lighter, easier to use, and more foolproof than 35mm.
From inception, APS offered lower quality at higher cost
per shot than 35mm, but it was thought that people would
feel the convenience offered sufficient value to warrant
the cost

But shortly after introduction, much of the technology, from
T-grain to index prints to color correction to automatic film
loading were available to 35mm shooters. The low-end of the
market went to "one-use" cameras, so APS was left without
a natural customer base.

I use the Pronea as a car camera because it's small, can
be replaced cheaply and easily if it's stolen or broken,
and unlike my digital cameras, I don't worry about the
battery running down if it's off for a week or two. But
should this one die in the next couple of years, I'll
look seriously at a 35mm replacement.
