Deb Might be other groups that would help you out, but I am going to
make a few suggestions and give you a few things to think about.
Others may disagree, but I believe the first camera should be totally
manual with NO automated settings. I wouldn't spend a great deal on
one because you will want to upgrade soon and get the help of the
automation. But if the automation is on the first one, your daughter
may miss many of the fundamental that will be important. The
knowledge she gain will last a lifetime. Some will say you can set an
automated camera in manual mode, and its true. Trouble is most won't
and the education is short cut.
As far as format, rather than the larger formats, Id suggest 35mm film
camera. If you learn film its easier to transition to digital and I
don't believe that any photographer can reach their full potential
without the knowledge gained from film.
I started with a Pentax K 1000. Simple, easy to use, but teaches you
things that will be needed regardless of what direction they may take
later. Countless other cameras would do the same thing.
Finally don't be afraid to go used, though I am not sure I would
particularly mention this to a 16 year old. Check out KEH.com and
after looking around give them a call. Not only do they have new, but
many fine used cameras that likely wouldn't even look used are
available without investing a fortune. Tell them what you told the
group and they can steer you in the right direction. Good luck
