Jim, I specifically told you some resources where you could find the
types of images you are looking for. I also mentioned, again
sepcifically, that they most of them weren't free and I did that
because the impression created by your words implied that you were
primarily interested in free images. As already noted by others, that
is an impression created in two populations of native English speakers
in spite of any variations in the common language as used. This is
not the result of errors in logic or in the ability to read by any of
us.
To claim that your words do not explicitly convey a request for free
pictures, while factually true, seems somewhat disengenous in light of
how language is actually used. As a matter of efficiency, English,
like most languages, triggers sets of reliable inferences in the
reader/hearer which comprise the real meaning of the communication.
Fluency in a language is pretty much a matter of competency in just
that ability. To have the native speakers of English in two different
cultural contexts infer that you were looking for free images because
of the natural inferences drawn in reading you post speaks directly to
your communications.
As a wordsmith, even an amateur wordsmith (I include poets here, too),
you should have an understanding of how words and communications work
as the foundation of your craft.
In my original response to you, I also mentioned how you could
potentially find images that might be free. I included that because
your post was sufficiently ambiguous that it seemed reasonable to
mention it, though the far stronger impression created by you was you
were after free images.
What you have gotten for your inquiry through this whole series of
postings is some constructive (if occasionaly toney) feedback on your
communications and pointers to the resources needed for YOU to find
the pictures needed. You essentially have whatever this NG can
provide you at this point and others have mentioned moving on with
that. That is probably the best course because you have created the
impression that you are an ass. Taking a deep breathe, creating a
different nick and trying this again is another option that has also
been suggested. That would disconnect any of your future posts from
associations that have been formed in this thread.
On a personal level, I wasn't originally motivated to help you
directly on the basis of your being too vague in several areas. Now,
seeing your interactions here and getting sense of who I would be
dealing with, which may in fact be a false impression, I wouldn't want
to work with you on your project even to produce images on a
commissioned basis.
