Your entire post is valuable advice.  But, I particularly like the part I 
have quoted, above.  In fact, the idea is so good, it would be a valuable 
exercise for anyone who wants to improve his/her pictures, whether B & W
or 
color.

BTW. I know people who do excellent B & W photography without the use of 
film, but they usually have big bucks invested in high end B & W printers.
