My daughter is just going through exactly this question as I said I 
would buy her a SLR after she got her PhD.

It is really all about handling and balance more than anything else. 
What may suit one person may not suit another. In her case she found the 
Nikon better as it suited her hand size, was lighter, and as the lens 
and body are similar weights it generally hangs level on the neckstrap 
whereas the Canon tilts.

Go to your local camera shop on a quiet weekday and fondle them both. If 
you are lucky one will suit your hands better than the other and that is 
the one you should buy irrespective of other facilities (most of which 
you won't use anyway.) If you are unlucky and they both feel 'right' 
then it comes down to bells and whistles and price.
