Hi, I have a G7 which in most respects is the same (less resolution, no
RAW,
and only 2.5 screen).
It is well made (solid) and gives good results. In my opinion it has too
many operating modes which cause confusion. The Multifunction dial on the
back is quite small and fiddly (it does several things at once). The
optical
viewfinder is poor as it only shows around 80% of the actual view (you can
see the lens through it). The LCD is not that good in bright sunlight
(common to most compacts). The LCD can be easily damaged if you carry the
camera a lot. (I have fitted a slim glass LCD protector found on eBay).
The ISO dial can be changed accidentally if the camera is kept in a ****rt
pocket!! ( 20 pictures of Montreal at 1600ASA on a sunny day!)
I don't like the s****ts mode, it is too slow. Most of the programme modes
appear to set auto ISO which converts to 400ASA in many situations and
noise
in the pictures.
Forget the programme Scene modes and use Av or Tv Priority and set a
manual
ISO and you should get good results. I have seen reasonable results in
poor
light.
Yes I like it, but I also use a Canon 40D for im****tant things. I use it
for
trips where I don't want the bulk of a Dslr. The improvements on the G9
should make it even better in the quality stakes, but the drag of
processing
a lot of RAW pictures may unworkable for a long trip.
